The most powerful card in a game of Gin Rummy is the Jolli (Joker). Ada Bizzarri, former owner and cook (alongside husband Lorenzo) of Hamilton’s Northern Star Café taught her children and grandchildren their family-favourite game. A first-generation immigrant, Ada carries a reputation of a serious pragmatist, a hardworking woman raising a family in a foreign country, but a perfectly timed Jolli never fails to bring her a toothy grin and a cheeky chuckle. She has a terrible poker face.

Jaci Lappin, former Hunter Senior Citizen of The Year, is a widely loved, exuberant, kind woman who has worked many years building up Carrington Bowling Club into the thriving community so many people enjoy. When I went to take photos of her for this painting, we sat and chatted over a few schooners, and she waved and said hello to every person that turned up. I think that says a lot about her character.
