Nathaniel Corboy - Steel City #15 Rust and Rocks

  • Acrylic on canvas
  • 45cm x 59.5cm

As a recent Newcastle convert, the artist appreciates the beauty of both the natural and manmade elements that make up Newcastle and the wider regions. In particular, the artist focuses on the interplay of organic and inorganic elements, like how the saltwater of Merewether Beach has imprinted itself onto both the rocky shoreline and pump shelter. Beautiful browns and baby blues interchange across the piece much like nature changing and toying with the colours of these facades in reality.

As one of sixteen pieces in the “Steel City” collection, this recent landscape collection completed by the artist recognises the industrial production history of Newcastle. Each of the artworks hold focal points or hints of steel to emphasise how the architecture and city itself, embed metal into everyday life and pay homage to its own history. Here, the metal railings and doors have oxidised and morphed into deep bronze and golden tones, highlighting a richness with age. It is as if the Newcastle atmosphere itself continues to breathe life into the metal underpinnings of its history and environments.
